NEW EDUCATION BILL.

SPECIAL SCHOOLS IN DANGER.

"I have a letter here," said Professor Segar at yesterday's meeting of the University College Council. "It is from a professor, a friend of mine, in Wellington, and he makes reference to the Education Bill to come before Parliament. I want to read you an* extract from it. He says : —'You see, if Mr. Hogben's report, which is also before tlie committee, is adopted, there will be no special schools at Auckland) or Wellington. You will lose special grants for mining and we for law and science, and we will have nothing to take their place. r Our university colleges will then be inferior to those of the South. Special grants will be made for special schools, but not for special purposes.'" ' The chairman said that this would nob do away with the School of Commerce here.

Professor Segar : But thai is not a spe-; cial school. After all, that school requires very little.

The chairman remarked that their proposed eubsitute for a School of Mines and Engineering was a School of Architecture. Professor Segar asked what was being done with reference to the Education Bill proposals.

The chairman said that nothing could ■be done at the present juncture. The Schools Committee was doing all Chat was possible in the matter, and they could only hope that the Government would do its best for the universities.
