ERECTION OF COTTAGES.

PROVISION OF, ACCESS.

A scheme for the erection of a ' number of cottages in a gully on the western side of Eastbourne Street, Remuera, was placed before the Remuera Road Board some time ago by Mr. R. H. De Montalk, and has been under the notice of the board at its recent meetings. • Part of Mr. De Montalk's' idea was that the board should construct a road and path approach to the houses, and at Lost night'a meeting of the board the engineer submitted a plan for a 15ft roadway and 6ft pathway in Eastbourne Road, the pathway being on the western side of the property on which Mr. De Montalk hud expressed his intention of building the houses. The plan provided r for a number of both cuttings and fillings. The engineer's estimate of the cost of the work was £575. A second plan was submitted by Mr. Do Montalk, which the engineer said he could not recommend. The latter scheme, he said, consisted of cuttings and practically did away with all fillings on the road, the spoil from cuttings being disposed of on adjoining allotments, to Mr. Do Montaiks benefit in filling in the gully. Most of thu- members of the board expressed the opinion that if Mr. Do Montalk carried out his building scheme the board would be in duty bound to put in a road of some description. Mr. A. B. Herrokl moved: "That the engineer's plans are the plans to be considered by the board, and if the board proceed with the work they do bo as per his plans. If not, that the matter be deferred for future consideration." The chairman (Mr. J. Dempsey) said that he regretted that the financial position of the board rendered it impossible to start any new road-making this year. Mr. De Montalk replied that he would come back later on with his scheme, "backed up by the best professional advice in the Dominion," which he considered would show his idea to be a good one.

Mr. Herrold's motion was then put to the meeting and carried.
