BOAT HARBOUR SITE.

GREY LYNN'S PROPOSAL.

SUPPORTED BY HARBOUR BOARD.

The Harbour Board decided yesterday to support the efforts of the Grey, Lynn Borough Council to obtain an area at Cox's Creek for the purposes of a boat harbour. The chairman (Mr. J. H. Gunson) reported that a deputation consisting of the Mayor and several councillors of Grey Lynn had waited upon him with reference to the board's objection to their application to the Marine Department to reserve Cox's Creek as a boat harbour., He- at once arranged' to visit the site in company with the deputation. When the matter was previously considered, the board was guided by the recommendation of the harbourmaster, who quite justifiably reported that the 'reservation of the whole of , this inlet would interfere with navigation. At that time the board had nothing, before "it. from the Grey Lynn Borough Council, which body had since represented its interests at that point, it now being clear that the whole of the tidal area within the bridge, namely, the inner basin, was vested in the Grey Lynn Borough Council by its 1909 Act. Any riparian right, if there be such, was a matter for the Grey Lynn Borough Council to deal with. On Monday -last, in company with the Mayor of Grey Lynn, Mr. Gunson further visited the site from the shore side. In view of the conditions, as now understood, ho considered that the proposal for the outer area to be utilised and reserved as a boat harbour was one which should receive the support of the board. The Mayor of Grey Lynn had advised him that the Grey Lynn Borough Council now desired to make application to the Marine Department that the fee simple of the area be vested in it by the Government. The area was, on account of its sheltered position, well suited as a place for a boat harbour, and there were a number of launch and boat owners resident in the district who would be greatly benefited by such provision. The rights of the board could not in any way be prejudiced, either for the present'or the future, by the adoption of the recommendation now" submitted. In view also of the fact that the Grey Lynn Borough Council was the proper authority to own and control the area, Mr. Gunson moved,. "That the board > having heard the Grey Lynn Borough Council's case, and having due regard to all interests, heartily supports the application of the council to the.Marine Department to have the fee simple and control of the area known as Cox's Creek vested in it." Mr. Gunson mentioned that several members of the board had visited Cox's Creek at high water. The spot was a beautiful one, and should be reserved as a boat harbour for pleasure craft. By aiding Grey Lynn, the board would be conferring a boon upon boating people. The Grey Lynn Council would appreciate the board action. The case was one where the board could help a local body without' in any way prejudicing or injuring the board's interest. Mr. G. R. Hutchinson seconded the proposition. The board should, he said, do all it could to improve the waterfront.' Mr. W. B. Leyland remarked that great use would be made of the harbour. On behalf of the City Council, Mr A ,T. Entrican supported the proposal, which he considered ,a be an excellent one. The motion was carried.
