VAGRANCY AND THEFT.

FOURTEEN DAYS IN GAOL.

A short sitting of the Police Court was held before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., yesterday. " It's all through drink, sir," said Thomas Martin Smyth, when admitting charges of vagrancy and of having stolen a plane, valued at 4s 6d, and a trap rag, valued at 37s 6d, the property of the Rev. Alexander Murray. Chief-Detective McMahon stated that the man had been living an idle life lately, and hud developed a habit of sleeping out. Ho hud wandered into Mr. Murray's shed and taken the articles named. Smyth said ho had been unable to find work in the city. The magistrate said he would give the man - a chance to get the drink out of his system. Tho charges against him could not be overlooked. Jie would be prohibited and sentenced to 14 days' hard labour. A first offender, who did not appear, was fined £1, the amount of his bail. Two other first offenders, one of them a woman, were each fined 5s or 24 hours, and a statutory first offender was similarly dealt with. James Wiffg (Mr. Bagnall) was fined £2 and costs for entering licensed premkes while prohibited.
