CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
EAST COAST STEAMER SERVICE.
A mketinp of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, when there were present:—Messrs. S. J. Nathan (chairraatn), G. Aickin, A. C. Stevenson, S. A. Longuet, F. E. .N. Gaudin, E. Anderson, John Reid, Thomas Peacocke, F.' Colbeck, E. C. Browne, G. Beattie, and Dr. McDowell.
Messrs. Richardson and Co. wrote, taking exception to a recent statement by the chairman with reference to the East Coast steamer traffic, to the effect that tho Squall made less frequent trips under her present Ownership than she did when) owned by the Union Company. Tho Squall, the letter stated, previously ran only to Tobago Bay and Gisborne, which run was now taken up by a steamer twice her eize. She was now doing the " bays," calling at 14 in all, and did the round once a fortnight, as against the previous service, which was on an average about once a month. Three times as muoht cargo was delivered to the coast from from Auckland as from Wellington and Napier put together, . and there was no doubt that Auckland merchants had much the better of the deal.
In reference to the same subject, the chairman stated that he had approached the Northern Steamship Company, but it could not see its way to take the matter up. It was decided that the question should bo deferred for the present, pending further investigations into the conditions. The following new members were elected .-—Brace, Windle, Blyth and Co., Ltd., Levers and Co., A. Sanford, Taujx) Totara Timber Co., Ltd., Hill and Plummer. Ltd., Wake and Anderson, Thompson and Hills, L. Marks and Co., H. Walk ley, Harringtons' N.Z., Ltd., and J. B. McEwan and Co.
