De. J. L. Hakkk, of Onehunga. is at present at a private, hospital sulk-ring from a severe attack of rheumatism.

Mr. A. J. McDonald, of Rotoraa, accompanied by Mrs. McDonald, is at present in Auckland, and is staving at the Star Hotel. • h

The Hon. E. W. Parker, who was some years ago superintendent for Dalgety ana Co. in New Zealand, has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of the company in London.

Mr. C. J. Parr. Mayor of Auckland. who left recently for Sydney, has gone on to Brisbane to avoid the inconvenience caused to visitors bv the outbreak of smallpox in Sydney. * He will remain in Brisbane for a fortnight.

The University College Council yesterday re-elected Sir 0. 'Maurice O'Rorke, whose term of reappointment to the council was announced", to the position of chairman. Sir Maurice thanked the council for the- confidence which it had reposed in him.

The Rev. R. Inglis, of Khandallah, Wellington, who has accepted a call to the Knox Presbyterian Church. Parnell. is to be inducted to his new charge on Julv 24. The moderator (the Rev. I. Jollv) is to induct Mr. Inglis. the Rev. W. T. Currio will preach a sermon, and the Rev. J. M. Saunders is to address the people.

The death occurred last evening of Mr. P. M. Griffen, a very old colonist (says a Press Association message from Greymouth). The deceased arrived in Otago in 1860, and took part in the Dunstan gold rush. He arrived at Greymouth in 1865, and e&uhlishf?d a business there. For some tim? he was a member of the Borough Council, and a justice of the peace.

Dr. R. H. Makgill. district health officer, left by the Main Trunk express train last evening for Wellington, where he will join a steamer for Sydney on Friday. From Sydney, Dr. Makgill will proceed on a holiday trip to Canada, the United Kingdom and the Continent. He will be absent from Auckland for about six months.

Dr. Kenneth Mackenzie, a son of the Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, High- Commissioner for Xew Zealand, has arrived in Auckland. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and a Master "of Surgery (Edinburgh). Shortly before his departure for New Zealand. Dr. Mackenzie was married to a daughter of the Rev. James Maedonald, of Edinburgh. They ere at present staying at Glenalvon.
