MEETINGS.

WOMEN'S POLITICAL LEAGUE.

The monthly meeting of the Women's Political League was held at the Foresters' Hall, Newton, Mrs. Rule presiding. Correspondence was read by the secretary, from Miss Ncwcomb, with a view to linking up the women's suffrage movement by means of the Dominion Overseas' Union. The general opinion was that women all over the world arc rousing themselves to a fuller sense of their powers. It was decided to ask the Employers' Association, in the face of the frequent statements. " That women are more capable and reliable " in several branches of business, why it is they do not receive equal pay with" men? The Saturday halfholiday came up for discussion, and it was unanimously decided to urge that public hotel bars be brought under the Shops and dices Act and compelled to close in conjunction with other retail businesses. MOUNT ALBERT SOCIAL CLUB. There was a large attendance at the weekly meeting of the Mount Albert Literary and Social Club. The evening look the form of a manuscript journal, with Mr. F. Astk-y as editor. Various items were contributed to the journal by members of the club. All of these were both instructive and amusing. PONSONBY DEBATING SOCIETY. The weekly meeting of the Ponsonby Literary and Debating Society was held on Monday night, in ■ the Leys Institute, the president (Mr. W. McMath) occupying the chair. Mr. P. Brodie was elected a member. The editor (Mr. H. N. Bagnall) submitted his second magazine of the season, which proved to be of exceptional merit. He dealt with the _ aims and objects of literary societies in general, and also wrote on the canons of criticism, on article which was very much discussed. Interesting articles were also contributed by Miss Furey, and Messrs. McMath, Blobbing, and Bflgnail, and an interesting discussion followed, most of the members present participating. During the evening the following subjects were chosen for prepared speeches for next Monday night:— Wealth, Its Use and Abuse," '• Freedom of the Press," " Personality," and " Patriotism." EPSOM ROAD BOARD. The Epsom Road Board met last evening Present: Messrs. F. H. Wood (in the chair)' A. McDonald, R. G. Clark, and E clay' A letter was received from the Department of Lands and Survey, asking the board to contribute to the extension of tho standard surveys from the city boundaries along the loading lines of traffic and settlement into the suburbs.
