IMPERIAL DEFENCE,
LEAD FROM AUSTRALIA. LESSON TO ENGLISHMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received June 11, 10-15 p.m.) London, June 11. At an Australasian banquet last night, Lord Chelmsford (late Governor of New South Wales) said he was greatly impressed with the lead Australia had given the Mother Country in connection with defence. The speaker sliid he hoped Englishmen would come to realise that everyone ought to sacrifice himself for his country to do what the Australians were doing. Mr. Hanning, President of the British Chamber of Commerce, at Paris, referred to the penalising of Australian produce in France as compared with the Argentine. Especially with regard to meat Australia, he held, was justly entitled to the most favoured nation treatment.
