CHINAMAN'S AFFAIRS.

CONSUL'S ASSISTANCE WANTED.

Cbeditobs in the bankrupt estate of Jim Wong, fruiterer, of Auckland, met yesterday to consider an offer to be made by Wong's partner, William Chan. The official assignee (Mr. W. S. Fisher) presided, while Mr. A. E. Skolton represented the bankrupt, and Mr. R. A. Singer appeared for tho bankrupt's partner. Mr. Stanton was present to represent various creditors. , William Chan, through his solicitor, intimated. that he was prepared to pay half the debts of tho estate, provided Jim Wong set forth clearly the position of affairs. Tho creditors, however, were not prepared .to accept this offer unless Wong was prepared to pay 5s in tho £ as well. Mr. Skelton stated definitely that his client was able to make no proposition as far as his debts were concerned. In his own interests, however, the bankrupt desired that tho books of account should be translated by the Chinese Consul resident in Wellington. Mr. Skelton added that lie was in a position to guarantee that the friends of Wong would pay for the translation. William Chan, however, considered that matters would not be settled satisfactorily unless the Consul, or his secretary, came to Auckland with the translation, and this being so ho was prepared to pay the expenses incurred in the trip to Auckland. The meeting was therefore adjourned to enable the wishes of tho bankrupt and his partner to be put into effect.
