CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS.

The City Schools Committee met for the first time last evening, there being present: Messrs. F. E. N. Gaudin (in lie chair), W. Miller,, J. C. Sharpies, G. Fell J. F. Hosking, Giles Pardington, W. Kane, and W,. Tailby..

Accounts amounting to £29 18s were passed for payment.

The chairman brought up the matter of the relations of the schools committee with the Education Board: He recounted, . for the information of new members, the steps leading up to the institution of a test case against the board in connection with the method of appointment of teachers. The old committee had on many occasions decided that the board's action in forwarding only one name was a contravention of the Act, and it was eventually decided to get a judgment from the Supreme Court as to whether the ■ board was acting within its rights. Unfortunately, the case had not come on for hearing. Ha wished to explain that the new members would not be responsible for, any expenses in connection with the matter^ lV : _ v .. -

Mr. J. F. Hosking remarked • that it seemed to him the new members would be likely to be joined as plaintiffs in any proceedings, and would thus be liable for a portion of the costs. , The chairman said he desired to know whether the new committee confirmed the old committee's attitude. When the name of the selected applicant was forwarded, along with names of unsuccessful applicants, the! qualifications of those persons not chosen were not sent along as the Act provided. . Mr. Pardington said the committee was fighting for a necessity. The board had overridden the powers of the committees, and the householders might as well have no representation at all. Mr. Kane thought the committee could protest against the appointment of individuals.

The chairman eaid thai this had been done. :■ .••"' -

Mr. Fell agreed with the action of the old committee.

Mr. Partington moved that the new committee place on record its confirmation of what the previous comitttee had done. Mr. Tailby" seconded the resolution; which was carried. •' -
