THREE SHOPS GUTTED.

[by. (TELEGRAPH.— press association.] Carterton, Monday. A fire occurred in the main street yesterday. It started in a- wooden, building occupied by Mr. Savage, a cabinetmaker, and spread to, premises occupied by Mr. Armstrong (saddler) and Mr. Phillips (solicitor): / .. " ' .

The fire had a good hold when discovered. Mr. Armstrong's stock was saved but Mr. Savage lost everything. The insurances on the stocks are as follows:—Mr. Savage £500 in the South British office; Mr. Armstrong, £260 in the Queensland and Commercial Union offices. The building insurances are unobtainable.

A. fire in the main street at 5.30 a.m. on Sunday destroyed Tumor and Co.'s butcher's shop and contents and Mrs. Wolfe's stationery . shop, and contents, badly' damaged a shop occupied by . Wah Kee (fruiterer), and owned by Mr. : A. H. Herbert, and an empty shop owned by Mr. F. C. Tumor. The recently-installed high-pressure water supply was instrumental in checking i further spread of ■ the fire. The insurances are: Wolfe's stock, etc., £375; Turnor ! and Co.'s machinery and fittings, £200; buildings, owned by F. C. Otorohanca, Monday.

At about 4.30 on- Sunday morning a fire broke out and totally destroyed a dwellinghouse : occupied, by Mr. R. Watkins, and two shops, occupied by Mr. G. Carter (jeweller), and Miss'Z. Corban (fruiterer), respectively.'lt' is supposed that the fire started in the diningroom of the dwelling, the occupants of which had retired about eleven o'clock. -•'.'■ ;

■ All of Mr. Watkins's household effects were destroyed, but Mr. Carter's tools (there being - little stock) were saved by the boarders of a boardinghouse opposite. Miss Corban's stock and effects were also mostly saved. Mr. Mark ..Cowley was the owner, of the destroyed block, which was, it is understood, insured. Mr. Watkins had £100 insurance on his furniture, but his total loss will not be covered'. Mr. Carter was not insured.

The fire is stated to have been the first to have occurred at Otorohanga.
