UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE

♦ AGAIN WON BY OXFORD. PACE MADE BY CAMBRIDGE. * MAGNIFICENT FINISH. OXFORD'S MEMORABLE EFFORT. By Telcgrapp.—Press Association.—Copyright , LONDON,- March 13. r The annual university boat race . between Oxford and Cambridge was , rowed on the Thames to-day, and was won by Oxford by three-quarters . of a length. . Cambridge won the toss and chose the Surrey side. The weather was fine, with a light following wind. J The smooth water favoured Cam- ' bridge, who were quickest away, and ] were clear at a mile. They were a length ahead at Ham- < mersmith, and a length and a-half at < Chiswick. ' Oxford then spurted and reduced 1 the lead to half-a-length at Barnes < Bridge. 1 Cambridge maintained this advantage till a-quarter of a mile from the 1 finish, when Oxford made an effori which will be memorable in boat ' racing annals. ' < The crew, putting immense power ; into their work, crept up inch by i inch. ' ] . Cambridge, which did not respond to the calls for a spurt, led to within j 150 yds of the finish, where Oxford • came up hand over hand and won a , magnificently fought race by three- , quarters of a length., , The time was 20m. 535. The Prince of Wales followed the race in the umpire's launch. EEEVIOUB RACES. Last year's University boat race was won \ by Oxford by six lengths in 22m. ss. Tho . race was then rowed twice, owing to both boats sinking on the first occasion as the result of rough weather. The second race (which took place on April 1) was also rowed under unfavourable weather condi- , tion, the water being very choppy. A hailstorm was experienced during the raw. The previous three years' races were also won by Oxford, which thus has now five consecutive wins to its credit. The time , in 1911 (when Oxford won by 2% lengths) was 18m. 295., the shortest time on record Of the 70 races that have been rowed be tween the two -Universities since'lß39, Ox- ~ ford has won 39 and Cambridge 30. The •. race in 1877 resulted in a dead heat. ;
