AUCKLAND FARMERS.

THE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL YEAR. The annual meeting of the Auckland A. and P. Association was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. M. Phillipps presiding over a fair attendance of members. The annual reports of the association have already been published. In moving the adoption of the reports, the president made some comparisons between the 1912 and 1913 show accounts. The 1912 balance-sheet showed a profit of £751 6s 4d, while in the present balancesheet the profit amounts only to £295 13s lOd. This might make it appear that the result of the past year's operations had been unsatisfactory, bat the income for the past financial period was actually considerably in advance of the previous year. Had it not been for addditional expenditure to the amount of £500 over that for the 1911-12 period, the net profit for the past financial year .would have bee* little short of £800. These facte, taken in conjunction with the substantial balance of assets over liabilities, must be very gratifying. Referring to the library, Mr. Phillipps urged that it should be made si local bureau for obtaining records and information as to the best results obtained by successful and enterprising agriculturists. That could be done if those who had been successful in keeping their milk supply up to reasonable limits, supplied information to the office to be tabulated, so as to enable others in the same industry to compare experiences. It was in the interests of the more successful suppliers to spur the less successful to a higher standard, for the idea of a farmer gaining by the misfortune of his neighbour was gone for ever. The very life of the community, he continued, depended on its butter output, and , it could not afford that any single supplier should make any mistakes by applying wrong methods in hie business. The president stated that the value of herdtesting was generally recognised, and h# urged that the association should offer prizes for the sire and dam which produced three or more progeny that had come up to a recognised standard te be judged on pedieree lines. Regarding the appointment of judges, •he suggested that the list should be revised annually, that the election should be by ballot, and that the breeding associations should supply the A. and P. Association annually with a list of their approved judges. The motion was seconded by Mr. J. G. Rutherford., * Mr. G. J.' Garland referred to the efforts of the association to promote dairy herd competitions, and expressed the hope that ii spite of the discouraging results that had been achieved so far the executive would not abandon its efforts. The reports were, adopted. The executive was recommended to carry out a dairy herd competition this year, awarding the Weddel Cup and the prize of £30 set apart last year for the purpose by the association. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, Mr. J. M. Phillipps ; vice-president*, Messrs. S. W. Luxford and A S. Thompson; general committee, Messrs. J. Ambury, S. J. Ambury, A. D.
