DAMAGES FOR FACIAL INJURY
AGAINST SHIPPING COMPANY. [BY telegraph.— 'ASSOCIATION.! Napier, Thursday. In" the Supreme Court to-day, before the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) and a jury of 12, an action for £1000 damages, brought by Frederick' Shellam against the New Zealand Shipping Company was heard. The claim was in respect of injuries sustained by plaintiff while working in the hold of the steamer Waimate at Tokomaru Bay in June last. A beam fell, striking plaintiff on the nose and fracturing it very severely. Medical evidence went to show that plaintiffs nose was permanently injured, and that plaintiff would probably have to be treated for, the rest of his life. He had received such a shaking that he would probably never be the man he was. The jury awarded £55 (already paid), £81 • 16s lOd special damages, and £350 general damage^ , -
