POLICE COURT NEWS.

EARLY MORNING INCIDENT. The Japanese, Jack Soito, who had. been remanded oil several previous occasions, came before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S-M.* at '. the Police Court yesterday on changes of breaking and entering, and of doing wilful' damage to the extent of £6 ,13s 3d. ..On . | this occasion the services of an interpreter ' were dispensed with, Mr. J. B. lioadon appearing for the accused. ' ; ' 1 Elizabeth Morton, a single woman; eawi ' ' that on the night of February 21 sfee was ' in her house in Stanley Street, having re--1 tired to bed about half-past nine o'clock, : with her mother and two children. They then went to her mother's house & few doors 1 off, leaving Soito in the street. He lad wanted -to marry her, but she did not wish it. The magistrate then questioned her as to what encouragement she had given Soito, and saidtthatt t although he should be punished for the damage he had done, yet , the circumstances were hardly sufficient .to send him to the Supreme Court on the | charge of breaking and entering. The more serious charge . was therefore withdrawn, and Soito was ordered to make good the damage, and to pay the costs. , He was also bound over in his own bond of £10 and a surety of £10 to keep the peace towards the complainant. MAINTENANCE. An <vld Henderson labourer named James Keidy said thai he was unable to pay anything towards the support of his son in an industrial school. Ho stated that the clothes he had on--somewhat ragged ones —were the best he hod. and that it was as much as. he could do to pay off bis debts. An order for the payment of 2s a week was made. , John McPheraon, summoned in respect of his failure to comply with, an carder for the payment of 10s a week for the support of his wife, the arrears amounting to £3, was stated bv Mr. Prendergast to _ have a habit, of only paying up after an information had been laid. As the defendant had frequently put complainant to expense 1 in recovering arrears by only paying at the last moment, and not appearing, as ho had done in this case 4 a fine was asked ; for. Defendant was fined 5s and 21« ' costs. ' • - _
