WATER SUPPLIES.
THE MOUNT ALBERT DISTRICT.
A report dealing with the new water supply for the Mount Albert borough was read from Messrs. H. H. Metcalfe and Son at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last night.
The report stated that at the pumping station the lift pumps were fixed in place near the bottom of the new well; the delivery pipes and guides for pump-rods were fixed and the engine was already in place. The pumps were at present delivering 270,000 gallons a clay, and the population supplied, including that of the hospital, was about 9000, so that the consumption Tan to about 30 gallons a head daily—a fairly liberal allowance for a, district in which the water-carriage system did not obtain Looking to the uncertainty of any increase in the springs for perhaps three months, it would be well to practise economy in using water. If this were done there would be no need to fall back en the city supply, which had been connected to the pumping station as a matter of precaution some two years ago, but which so far had not been required. Tho Mayor (Mr. M. J. Coyle), in moving the • adoption of the report, referred to the reports which had been circulated in the borough to the effect that Mount Albert had been forced to draw on the city supply for its writer. It was surprising, said the speaker, that irresponsible persons should circulate such silly rumours in the district, and ho expressed the wish that in future such individuals would make inquiries from the council before causing a false alarm among the ratepayers. . ■ . • The report was adopted.
