EDUCATION AND DEFENCE.
UNIVERSITY PROPOSALS. CONDITIONS FOR DEGREES. EFFICIENCY IN MILITARY TRAINING. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright (Received February 24, 10.50 p.m.) London, February 24. Many university authorities welcome the suggestion of the 63 members of the Senate of the University of Cambridge, who propose co-operation with the Oxford University in making the conferring of degrees dependent upon attaining efficiency in the territorials or officers' training corps.
Others object to the degrees being made dependent upon military training. Some suggest that certain privileges should be conferred upon those who are undergoing training. The Daily News says that if the universities are authorised by the State to declare that no man shall have knowledge unless he becomes a soldier, it would be equal to blackmail and treason to science.
