FAIR TRIAL FOR MADERO.

(Received February 25, 5.5 p.m.) Washington, February 22. A message from Mexico City states that General Huerta (the newly appointed provisional. President of Mexico) is asking the rebel leaders to confer with him with the object of securing peace throughout Mexico.
It is announced by General Huerta that he intends to use- exPresident Diaz's methods, if necessary to secure peace and order, no matter what it may cost. General Huerta has published a statement to the effect that Madepo arranged a list of proscriptions, including a number of Senators and Deputies and all foreign correspondents.
The United States Government strongly protests against any further executions, and it expresses an anxiety to protect 2vladero. _ It is ■ announced by jxir. if* Knox (Secretary of State) that the United States Government intends to intervene in the Mexican situation in order to secure a fair trial for Madero on the charges that have been J. HI d against him.

AVOIDING INTERVENTION.

New York, February 24.
President Taft, in a speech at a peace banquet last evening, said that the United States would exercise every effort to avoid intervention in Mexico. He ' did not sympathise with the attitude of those who advocated intervention for the purpose of gain or the exploitation of a rich country like Mexico.
