SCHEME.

Whether the proposed tramway for Upper Queen Street will be laid or not will be known in the course of a day or two. The negotiations are now reaching the finality stage, and the indications point to the success of the Tramway Extension League's plea that the line should be immediately proceeded with.-.' ..'-'-•.' -'•« : Mr. \V. J. .Napier, chairman of the league, told a Herald representative last evening that the league was pushing the matter on as fast as possible. The claim of Mr. R. H. Abbott for £2000 compensation for the strip of his property at the corner of Upper Queen Street and Karangahape Road, which it would be necessary to acquire to obtain a satisfactory curve in the rails at, this, corner, was still under the consideration of the Electric and Water Committee of the City Council, and the committee was making a further endeavour to come to terms with Mr. Abbott. • ;:\", '•;.■..';.■>:■'■ ■• ,' 't ; ;. ;

Mr. Napier added that. the league, recognising that the work was of great importance to the city, wished to have the tramway'in operation as soon as possible, and as Mr. Abbott's claim was practically the only obstacle, it had written _ to the Electric and Water Committee urging that the latter should not delay, but. should taMe the ■ strip of ' land,'coniipulsorily under the Public Works Act.. _' : A _ reply to this letter, giving some indication as .to the course likely to be; adopted, was expected within a day or two. Owing to the increased traffic at the corner of Wellesley and Queen Streets, it is being urged by business people in the vicinity that the frequent holding 'up of cars at this point is a serious source of danger. The line along Upper Quenn Street, it is claimed, would materially minimise this danger, and some impatience is evident from the,delay which has already occurred-in the negotiations regarding 'the extension!""
