Williams, the energetic American who in a few years has amassed a considerable fortune as the pioneer of tho moving picture show in Melbourne and Sydney, proposes to introduce to Sydney harbour a motor-boat which will bo tho fastest craft of any sort in the world. Sydney motor-boat enthusiasts have already in commission launches capable of a speed of 30 knots an hour, but Mr. J. D. Williams's flier will completely outclass them, being designed for a smooth-water speed of 54 miles an hour, or something a little faster than the fastest express trains in the Southern Hemisphere. The 'boat, which is being built in Sydney, is a hydroplane. Moving at top seed, tho hull will rise bodily out of the water, till only the stern, with the propellers and ruddor, remains in actual contact with the sea. The boat will bo only 20ft long, and most of tho space aboard her will be occupied by the engines, of which thore are two eight-cylinder sets, each developing 75 horse-power. The engines are said to 'bo the most powerful ever placed in a boat of tho size. Tho little ship will not bo exactly a comfortable and pleasure craft to take a seat in. There are seats for a crew of two only, and the crew must sit in the stern sheets, just abaft the exhaust pipes of the engines. When running at high speed the boats will be about as cleanly as tho inside of a factory chimney, but on speed craft cleanliness and comfort are not considered at all. The plans for tho new boat were prepared by Mr. Maurice M. Whitakor, of Now York, designer of many successful motor-racers. The cost of tho- ££*&. »Dll lax. £3000, /^^T'-^Cfe^ v tsS* 3^
