AUCKLAND, TO SYDNEY.
NEW CABLE A SUCCESS.
MINISTER'S CONGRATULATIONS.
The business done on the new direct cable of the Pacific Cable Board between Auckland and Sydney yesterday, the. opening day, was satisfactorily heavy. The line was kept busy throughout the day. i The Hon. R. H. Rhodes (PostmasterGaneral) has telegraphed from Christchurch to Mr. Milward. manager in the Pacifio for the Pacific Cable Board, as follows —"Please accept my congratulations on. the successful opening of your new cable, which will still further draw together the bonds uniting the southern Dominions of the Empire, and help to bring them into closer association on points of material interests."
The reply sent by Mr. Milward was ias follows;—" Much gratified at the receipt of your message and pleased to be able to report that the new cables have done excellent work to-day. Am confident when the staff is familiar with the new conditions of transit that the times between Australia and New Zealand will be reduced to an absolute minimum. Please accept my best thanks for your promise to be present at the luncheon in Auckland on January 14 to celebrate the occasion.".
