The Rev. Canon Garland, of Queensland, organising fecretary of the Bible in State Schools league, arrived from the South bv the Main Trunk express on Saturday. In the afternoon he was present at a cardc-n party given in his honour hv Mr?. A. C. Csughey, president of the Women's League. Canon Garland preached at St. Paul's Church yesterday morning, and at St. Matthew's Church last evening; and in the afternoon ho gave an address at the Y.M.C.A. To-night he will speak at the Bible in Schools demonstration to be held at the Town Hall.

Mr. Joseph William Reynolds, a, greatly respected settler, died at Waiihou after a short iUnei». He was well known in many parts of New Zealand. Prior to his arrivalu in New Zealand he served 12 years in the array in India, and passed through the Indian Mutiny. Mr. Reynolds was at one time a member of th« old armed ' constabulary, taking part in the campaign tol'arihata. Afterwards he took up mining at Corornandel. He died without issue, but leaves a number of step-children, including Mr. G. Hyde, of the Star Hotel, Auckland, and the Rev. N. Hyde, Wes- ' Jeyan minister at Shannon. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and was .very largely attended.

Father Costello, of St. Patrick's Church, Palmerston North, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon at the age of 53 years (states a Press Association telegram); Death was due to heart failure, following after a series of influenza attacks. The deceased was educated at the Catholic College at Innis, County Clare, and also under Archbishop Erington. He was ordained by the Bishop of Killaloa, and undafr medical advice came to New Zealand a* curate under Bishop Luck, at Auckland. - His first mission was Pukckohe, and afterwards he was administrator of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland.* Father Costello travelled South America, and Ireland in aid of church funds, and while in Ireland suffered from a violent fever, and was ordered to return to New Zealand. He was appointed to Gisborne, «nd later was assistant priest at Wellington and a priest at Greymouth and Marton. Finally he went to Palmerston North, where he had .successfully launched a scheme to build a new St. Patrick's Church. The deceased was ex-.-popular, especially with the young, and was famed for the simplicity of his eloquence. The funeral will be held on Tuesday.
