London', November 1. Mb. and Mrs. J. H. Tatlob (Auckland) have booked passages by the s.s. Cbrinthic, sailing in December. Mrs. Taylor is now in much improved health.

To-day the Royal College of Physicians publishes the names of those who have just been granted licenses to practice physic. These include Harry James Hoby (New Zealand and Guy's Hospital), and Louis Bruce Stringer (Guy's Hospital).

Mr. Olaf Stout will return to New Zealand in a fortnight's time by tho s.s. Mooltan. It was hoped that he would bo ablo to go with his Mother and sister by tho &f. Malwa to-day, but he was not able to get through the formality of being " called " to tho Bar in time to start so soon.

The only callers at tho High Commissioner's office yesterday and t»j-day have been: Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Ellerbeck (Auckland), Mr. William McKay (Auckland). Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Alington (Ashburton), Miss M A. Wayne (Milton), Miss Munro (Hawke'a Bay), and Miss M. Munro, Mr. John Marshall (Auckland).

The Rev. W. IT. Long, a graduate of the Leeds. Clergy School, and for some years assistant curate at the parish church at Leeds, has been accepted for service in the Melanesian mission field He will leave for New Zealand in January, en route for the Islands. .He is now studying- medicine and surgery at Livingstone College,

Mr. P. A. Vaile is about to publish his 10th book .in London. It is to be called "The Soul of Golf," and will deal very drastically with theories which have been put forward by several of the leading players, especially Mr. Harry Vardon. Mr. "v"aile has another article in the Fortnightly this month, continuing the controversy with Sir J. J. Thomson.

Quite a number of New Zcalanders have lately joinod the Royal Colonial Institute, the latest list of new fellows including tho [ following names:—Mr. Henry H. Adams, Mr. A. S. Bankart, Mr. 0. R. Williams, and Mr. Justice Edwards.

Lord Liverpool has now appointed his staff as follows: Private secretary, Mr. Gavin Hamilton; aides-do-camp, Captain Shawc, and Lieutenant T. R. Eastwood, of the Third Rifle Brigade; and Lieutenant George Hutton, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Captain Shawo joined the Rifle Brigade in 1898, was appointed captain in 1904, and since 1903 he has been A.D.O. to the General Officer Commanding the Troops in Ireland. Lieutenant Eastwood entered the Rifle Brigade in 1910, and Lieutenant Hutton joined his regiment in 1906:

The Freshmen's sports were begun at Cambradgo yesterday. In tho third heat of the 100 yds race T. H. Kinder (New Zealand and Caiu3) came in first. L. N. Ybunghusband (New Zealand and Pembroke) came third in the long jump (18ft 2i?'n), the winner's record being 19ft Bin. T. Rigg (New Zealand and St. John's) was third in the one mile race, which was-won by a Rugby and Caius man by 4ydn, 20yds separated second and third. In the second heat of tho 120 yds hurdle race. L. N. Younghusbaud was first, winning 'by 6yd.3. Time, 18 l-ss.

Tho last public act of tho Governor-elect leforo his departure for Now Zealand was his appearance on Wednesday evening at a largely-at tended reception of New Zoalaridors at the Westminster Palace Hotel. The gathering was an exceptionally large one, very similar to that which welcomed Lord and Lady Islington in 1910. The High Commissioner and Mrs. Mackenzie received the guests, who then passed on and shook hands with Lord and Lady Liverpool, who were accompanied by Lady Hamilton, widow of the late Sir Robert Hamilton.
