THE CONFIDENCE TRICK

A charge of stealing £2 from Andrew John Davidson, was preferred against against Joseph Morgan at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. E. 0. Cuttert, S.M. Chief Detective McMahon stated that Davidson, a stranger to the city, met the accused and man, who asked him to treat them to drink. This he ■ goodnaturedly did. The accused and his companion then told Davidson that they had left their "swags" at the railway station, and needed half-a-crown to get them. Davidson lent them the Bum named, but it subsequently transpired that tho statement about the "swags" being at the station was a fabrication. Later, Morgan again met Davidson, and stated that if he had £1, he (Morgan) could obtain work for the three of them at Limestone Island. Davidson trustingly gave him tho money, but Morgan subsequently returned, and stated that £2 was required. Another £1 was given to Morgan, but that was the last Davidson saw of him. Morgan admitted having received tho money from Davidson, but said that he, (the accused) must have been robbed of it whilo in a hotel the same day. A sentence of two months' hard Labour was imposed.
