WAR AND THE PRICE OF PERFUME.
It is feared that perfumes may prove more costly because of the war, inasmuch as Bulgaria is practically the sole source of the supply of attar of roses. Though the seaeon is over ,it was such a bad one that prices have been steadily rising for some time. The demand for attar of roses is very great, for it is used in making many kinds of perfumes favoured by society women. It is stated that 1501b of rose leaves are required to givo one ounce of the precious attar. The principal stills are at Kazanlik, in Eastern Roumelia, which, at the time of the battle of Plevna, belonged to Italy.
