LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

CHORAL SOCIETY'S CONCERTS.

Sir,—Why is it that the Choral Society never makes any change in the choruses selected from the "Messiah" at the yearly concert? Surely a change might be made with benefit to all concerned. It would give an increased interest to the practices, which are too often very dull, and would afford the subscribers an opportunity of hearing some of the l>cautiful but neglected choruses. There are some " Messiah" choruses that aro uninteresting and rarely done; but, on the other hand, for some unexplained reason, many beautiful choruses have been severely left alone by the society during the past 12 years. If the excuse be made that there is not sufficient time to practise new choruses, why are the practices for the previous concert needlessly dragged on as is too often the case? jfe it the apathy of the committee or of the conductor that is responsible for. the never-changing selection from the " Messiah?"

KARANGAIIAFE ROAD.

Sir,—Regarding Karangahapo Road and the permanent paving thereof, the facts cf the caso are:—(l) The work is sadly needed, the present state of the road being an absolute disgrace. (2) The permanent paving will increase the value of every section on the road. It will, however, decrease the value of some buildings. (3) Tho large majority of the buildings will not be decreased in value by the scheme, (4) As all sections will be increased in value by this public expenditure, all sections should contribute to tho interest and-, sinking fund. (5) The permanent paving will benefit not only the owners and occupiers, but the whole of the city directly or indirectly. I therefore contend that tho whole city should pay for the 1 improvement of the street, but that an additional loan should bo raised by tho Council for tho purpose of adjusting all the buildings to tho new footpath.'), the Council to do the work, and the interest and sinking fund of this special loan fop alteration of buildings to be an annual charge on the sectionowners of Karangahapo Road,, ' T. H. WIILIAVIS. Ponsonby Road? November 28, 1912.
