AN EXPERT INVESTIGATION.

The methods followed by .the Public Trust Office in. the conduct of its rapidlygrowing business wero subjected to some criticism in tho House of Representatives during the last session, and a promise was then, made by the- Hon. A. L. Herdman, who is the Ministerial head of the Department, \ that' he would arrange for a competent inquiry. Last evening Mr. Herdman announced in an interview that early in tho. new year a Commission of two gentlemen will be appointed to report to him upon the working, of the Department. Although lie had selected the members of the Commission he could not name them, as he had not yet completed his-arrangements for the inquiry. Mr Herdman added that the report would necessarily bo confidential, as it would deal largely, with private affairs. When the recommendations of the Commission were carried into effect, he believed tho Public Trust Office would be conducted in » manner ; aa, nearly perfect as could be achieved.
