SEAMEN'S UNION COMBINE
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND PROPOSED FEDERATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. Sydney, December 5. The Sydney Morning Herald announces that the Federated Seamen's Union of Australasia is about to absorb the New Zealand Seamen's Union. Under the amalgamation the funds will be pooled, and the entire service worked as one great organisation.
It is stated that the above announcement is premature, no decision having yet been arrived at The question of amalgamation will bo discussed at a conference of delegates representing Australia and New Zealand, to bo held "in March next. At a, recent meeting of the Auckland branch of the union it was resolved that any move in the direction of removing local autonomy, or interfering with New Zealand finances, should be strongly opposed. It was further resolved s that the New Zealand "delegates to the conference should be advised to act carefully in view of the fact that in the New Zealand award there is a proviso for preference to unionists, while Mr. Justice Higgins has declined to grant a similar concession in the Australian award.
