BIG BATTLE AT SCUTARI.
TURKISH SORTIE FAILS. HEAVY LOSSES. PANIC IN THE TOWN. Cettinje, December 4. The Turks besieged in Scutari made a sortie upon the left flank of the Montenegrins early on Monday. The attack gradually developed into a pitched battle, which raged for 28 hours in spite of torrential rain. When the Turks left their entrenchments and dashed' across the open towards the Montenegrin positions the latter held their fire until the enemy were almost upon them. The Montenegrins then poured a heavy fire upon the attacking party from artillery, machine guns, and rifles, decimating their ranks. The artillery on both sides were engaged throughout the night. The battlefield was strewn with corpses and shells. Great damage was caused within the town by fire breaking out at several points.
The population is in a state of panic. The Montenegrin losseß the engagement were small.
