BILLIARDS ON SUNDAY. A billiabd saloon keeper named Edmund Hill, charged with having kept bis» v saloon open during prohibited hours, name]jv on. a Sunday, appeared before Mr. E. C. Culten, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. It was stated in evidence that defendant was the licensee of a billiard saloon on the Great North Road. On Sunday, November 10, a passing constable heard the click of billiard balls. Knocking at the door, he received no answer, and therefore proceeded to climb over a fence to gain access to a window. Looking through it ho paw the billiard saloon lighted up, and six young men having a game. He entered and took their names, but did not see defendant. Mr. Moody, who appeared for defendant, stated that his client had no knowledge that the room was being used on the Sunday in question. In his absence a. man engaged to clean the rooms on Sunday mornings, and who had a key, postponed his work until the evening, _ and f in the meantime allowed some of his friends to enter for a game. Under the circumstances, His Worship said, lie had no alternative but to discharge the defendant. The six young men who were found in the room were each fined 10s, and ordered to pay the costs between them. '-,:-.i. ■

Smith, his employee, for working a horse whilst in an unfit condition, were fined £2 and 10s respectively. Charged with overloading three horses, i..
