CRICKET.

THE DISTRICT COMPETITIONS.

THIRD ROUND COMMENCED.

BIG SCORE BY GRAFTON.

EDEN AND PONSONBY IN GOOD

POSITIONS.

Grafton, 303, t. North Shore, three for no wickets. University, 84, v. Ponsonby, 147 for four Parnell, 155, ▼. Eden. 75 for two wickets. THE BEST PERFORMANCES. BATTING. E. Horspool (Grafton), not. out .. ..113 Sauvarin (Grafton) 56 Wilson (Ponsonby), not out .. •■46 Grenier (Parnell) .. .... -.45 Bennett (Parnell) 37 Homus (Eden) 37 C. Snedden (Ponsonby) .. •• - « BOWLING. Woods (Ponsonby), five for 26 Hay (Eden), four for 40. J. Mills (Eden), four for 47. Dacre (North Shore), four for 47. N. C. Sneddon (Ponsonby), three for 29. THE third round of the Auckland Cricket Association's senior competition was commenced on Saturday in dull weather. At each of the city grounds there was a fair attendance, but with the exception of the Grafton-North Shore game on the Domain the matches wore rather uninteresting. It was expected that the Parnell-Edon fixture would provide the closest contest, and when play commenced the biggest crowd of the season was assembled at Eden Park. Parnell won the toss, and as the wicket was easy decided to bat. Anthony and Grenier were tho opening batsmen, but the former had a very brief stay at the wickets, one of Hay's fart ones being dragged on to the wicket when tho total was but 3. Wright, obviously suffering from a sprained ankle, filled the vacancy, and the runs at once began to mount up. The half-century soon appeared, but after five more runs had been added Wright lunged at one on tho off. and was caught at point by Hemus. Sommervell, tho hero of the Grafton match, was next man in, but his stay at the i wickets was not of long duration, Taylor j accepting a simple one at mid-on off Cumminers. The same bowler accounted for Ellis in his next over, the batsman failing to stop a swerving ball that cannoned off his pads. Grenicr's score, meanwhile, was adding up, the batsman felying mainly on a chop between point and third man. With the total at 81, Olliff attempted to hit Mills out of tho ground, and was easily taken at mid-off by Cumminsre. Grenier added a single, but next ball Kerr stopped a straight one with bis pads, and six wickets were down for 82. With tho advent of Brown at the batting crease. Bay, who had taken one wicket for 19 runs. was given another trial. The change was at once effective. Grenier being bowled by the first ball. The last ball of the over proved fatal to Brown, Rountrce holding one behind tho wicket. When the last man (Bennett) joined Stephens tho score was j only 106. bat before a separation was effected no less than 49' runs were added. Bennett, playing the correct game under the circumstances, dealt out severe punishment to each bowler. He hit Mills for three fours in succession, but was caught behind the wicket in attempting a fourth big hit. It was a good innings, marred by ] only one chance—a hot one to Cummings at mid-off. At th© commencement of Eden's first innings a heavy driazl© came on, making the ball rather greasy. Taylor and Hemus were quick to take advantage of their opportunities, and the half-century was soon hoisted. Six runs later, however, Hemus made a poor stroke at a full toss, and was taken at mid-on by. Kerr. Cummings assisted Taylor to carry the score to 75. but with the last ball of the day Olliff got Taylor lbw. Eden, with eight wickets in hand, only require 81 for a twopoint win. and this feat should not be beyond them.

An excellent wicket was provided on the Domain for the Grafton-North Shore match, and Hay (Grafton) had no hesitation in deciding to bat. McCormick and Sauvarin were the pioneer batsmen, and the latter at once got busy, McCormick preferring to 'play the safe game. Chiefly through the agency of Sauvarin the runs came very quickly, and the score board read 60 when McCormick was taken by Archer, off Townshend. E. Horspool joined Sauvarin, but with only 16 runs added the latter gave a chance to Daere which was accepted. Sauvarin gave a.most vigorous display, hitting two sixes, six fours, and two threes, lie set an example which Horspool promptly followed. Fours came from his bat in almost every over, and the official in charge of the scoring board was kept extremely busy. When in the Bixtiee. Horspool gave a chance to Harper off Howden which was not accepted, but afterwards hie batting was free from blemish. He was still undefeated -when tUo last man departed. Included in his total of 113 were three hits for six each, thirteen fours, and four threes. It was a splendid exhibition of free cricket, and the crowd was not slow in expressing its approval. "Mr. Extras" was third highest scorer with 50, the wicketkeeping not being up to the mark. In the field, however, Shore did well. Prime took a particularly difficult catch on the boundary, and Howden also accepted a very hot one. Shore's bowling was repeatedly changed, but Dacre was the only bowler to meet with anything like success. At 5.45 p.m. the light was too bad to proceed, and stumps were accordingly drawn. University made a very poor showing against Ponsonby at "Victoria Park, nine wickets falling for 85. Woods bowled rather well for Ponsonby. but the man who stood out for good play was Robinson, who took no lees than three catches behind the wickets. Like the batting, University's bowling was weak, and Ponsonby soon established a lead. University appear 1 to be in a hopeless position. Some good performances were registered in the lower grade matches. In the fourth grade game Ponsonby v. Parnell, Godye. of the last-mentioned team, played a fine notout innings of 105. Smeeton, of the Grammar School, made 119 against Pah College, aDd Dacrc. the Devonport schoolboy, eclipsed all his previous efforts by making 200 not out against Richmond Road. Dacre has now scored well over 400 runs this season. Another schoolboy, Bass, of Nelsonstreet, scored a, century and three against Bayfield, following iip the performance bv taking five wickets. Dacre also did well with the ball, taking four wickets for 14 runs. Details are as follows: — PARNELL V. EDEN. PARNELL.—First Innings. Anthony, b Hay 2 Grcnier, b Hay 46 Wright, c Gumming*, b I. [by: telegraph.— association.] Christchtjrch, Sunday. The district cricket competition was resumed yesterday on an easy wicket, but owing to rain curtailing play on the previous Saturday most of the matches were decided on the first innings. St. Albans, playing against Iticcarton, had 117 on the board for thrice wickets when rain stopped play last week, and as Barrett, Wood, E«id, Miles, and Sandman all made runs, they were able to declare their innings closed with nine wickets down for 255. Sandman at once got to work among the Riccarton batsmen, and the innings closed for 109, St. Albans winning on the first innings. West Christchurch resumed against Sydenham, and increased the previous total from 60 for two wickets to 243 for seven wickets, when the innings was declared closed. Thanks to a very free innings by Patterson, and sound batting by liases, Sydenham were able to pass the West Christchurch score with the loss of six wickets, saining an unanticipated win with the score of 258. Linwood, with one wicket down for 71, continued the interrupted innings against East Christchurch. Perrin, Jones, and Thomas scored freely, and the innings was declared closed with four wickets down for 178. East Christchurch, with just under two hours to play,' scored steadily, T. Carlton hitting up 61 not out carefully. Beals's innings was interesting, and Reid was well set when he was run out. although ho was badly missed in tho deep-field when his score was 10. The Linwood fielding was rather slovenly. The match resulted in a draw. East Christchurch scoring 173 for seven wickets.
