.T. A. Troup, who was a member of the Victorian loam at tho last, Australasian Championships in Wellington, easily won the championship of his school (Scotch College) recently. H« won tho long-jump (20ft Tin), 100 yds (10 2-ssec), 220yils (23 l-5«?c), 440 yds (H l-sscc), tied for first place in the high-jump (sft 2in), and was third in the mile. 'Mr. Austin Smith will art- a.-? starter for the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club this .season. The club will hold an evening meeting on Wednesday evening next, wlien two events—a 150 yds handicap and a mile handicap—will 'be decided. The handicap* for each event will be framed by Mr- H. J. l'oilder. In connection with tho Auckland Amateur Club's carnival the Northern Boxing Association lias been asked to grant a permit for ;i boxing match. Jf tho necessary permission is obtained it is probable that Gordon Mensios, who defeated Treweek at the association's last carnival will bo matched with a prominent light-weight. A stir has l»een created in athletic circles by the big prize offered for a monster tufr-of-war in connection with St. Michel's fair, ■which is to be held in the Royal Kink, commencing on tho 16th of next, month. The prize is £80 for a team of eight, men, which means actually eight pulling, with the addition of contain and emergency. The first prize is £70, and £10 for second money. This substantial prize should revive an interest and put. new life into this cla.ss of sport. The promoters of this fair are to bo commended for their enterprise in putting up such a big stake, and it is anticipated that teams from all over New Zealand will compete. Tho " pull " is open to all-comers, all trades, also international. A revival is also promised at this fair of a good oldfashioned sport—" nulling tho lazy stick.'' This competition will take place on alternate nights, and on each occasion gcxxl prizes are offered.
