THE PAYING QUESTION.
KARANGAHAPE ROAD PROPOSALS. THE LEVELS DIFFICULTY". A deputation - of residents and business men owning property in Karangahape Road waited upon the Works Committeo of the City Council yesterday to dj>cuss the question of paving the road. Tho Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr), who presided, explained that, tho Council was anxious to pave tho road with a permanent and lasting material. He was of the opinion that Karangahapo Road being tho second great shopping street of Auckland, should be made a first-class thoroughfare. There was one great difficulty, however. On 0110 side the present shops and buildings wore 2ft 3in below the permanent leVel to -which it was proposed to build the new road. It the Council proceeded with the work, which would raise the level of the present footpath 2ft oin, it might bo faced with, claims for compensation from the property Mr. Parr said that the Council wanted to know where it stood regarding this aspect of the question. •A , lengthy discussion followed. One member of tho deputation declared that he would claim compensation, but another said that he, with others, was willing to assist the Council. Sir. W. E. Bush (city engineer) answered a number'of questions regarding the levels, and it was finally decided, upon, the Mayor's suggestion, that five of the ratepayers should form themselves into a committee to work in conjunction with the Works Committee of the City Council to discuss the question with all tho propertyowners. Messrs. F. J. Amburv, Jones, Prosper, Rendell, and Davenport, were subsequently elected a committor.
