ENFORCING THE DEFENCE ACT
RETURN OF CASES DEALT WITH. [Bt TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. A return', presented to Parliament on the motion of Mr. Witty (Riccarton), the number of cases dealt with up to August 25 for non-compliance with the provisions of the Defence Act. Up to that date 1547 summonses liai been issued, 1109 cases had been dealt, with by the magistrates, and 675 actual ■convictions recorded; 439 cases had been withdrawn by tho Department-, and five persons wero in prison for the first time (none for the second time). Detailed reasons were given under 32 headings for the withdrawal of the 439 caseo. Of these 105 complied with tho Act, and 108 were for " reasons not etutech'fc J
