A local resident who has just returned from tho north-eastern beacon of Southern Rhodesia relates a remarkable story of the death of four bull elephants near Goronga, a largo kraal in close proximity to tho Portuguese border. Some weeks ago four magnificent animals were discovered by some natives in a pool in the bed of a river whither they had apparently gone to drink. The pool was deep but not sufficiently so to drown them, and they had evidently made desperate efforts to get out. This they were unable to do, the granite sides of th© pool being steep and smooth. When found the elephants were almost exhausted from their struggles, which were quickly ended by some Portuguese, who secured a valuable haul of ivory. The carcases furnished a royal feast for the natives within a radius of 50 miles. How the animals got into the pool is cot known, but in" all probability they miscalculated its depth and were finable to draw back in time to prevent what the Bhodesian Herald truly calls an gaejjhantine trajzedx-. ;
