WAERENGA VALLEY.

MILITARY SOCIAL. A social was held last week in the Waerenga Hall, organised' by the territorials, members of "H" Company, 16th (Waikato) Regiment, who are resident in thfo. and surrounding districts. The hall was nicely decorated with ferns and flags, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Captain Burgess and ' Sergeant-Major Leech were present, the former in a neat speech, expressing his pleasure in being enabled to attend. Mr. J. Bruce, a settler of many years standing, has recently sold, his farm, and has gone to Hamilton to reside. Previous to their .departure, Mir. and Mrs. Bruce were presented with a silver tea and coffee service, as a mark of esteem.

CAMBRIDGE. AUTOMATIC STREET-LIGHTING. In the presence of members of the Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. Geo. Dickinson) last ; evening performed' the ceremony of setting in, motion the automatic street-lighting system machinery and opening the buildings in connection therewith. Under the new system a big saving i will be effected and greater efficiency provided. • The bowling season opened here yesterday in the presence of a large number of bowlers, including representatives from the Hamilton, Frankton, and Te Awamutu clubs. - Matches were played between the president's (Mr. Butler) and vice-presi-dent's (Mr.. Jays) teams, victory resting with' the former by 178 points to 138. The croquet season was also opened yesterday. The Mayor (Mr. Geo. THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. j. At the annual meeting of tho Chamber lof Commerce the annual report and balance-sheet were .adopted. Attention was drawn to the great, disparity between the amounts placed on the Estimates for Piako and Ohinemuri Counties respectively, and also to the fact that whereas Rotorua gets £8000, only £175"is voted for To Aroha to cover the expenditure already made. It was decided to ask the Mayor, to co-operate with the Chamber in drafting a telegram of remonstrance to the Government. On the suggestion of Mr. Somers, it was resolved to take the preliminary steps to have the town and district represented at the forthcoming Auckland Exhibition. Tho' Waihou Polo Club formally opened the season yesterday in the presence of a large number of visitors. The ceremony was performed by Mr. Hugh Magill, president of the club. Two teams of the players then'gave an exhibition for 10 minutes, in which some capital play was exhibited," players and poniee being in the pink of ' condition. Then followed a tournament, in which four teams took part for a prize J of- four sticks, presented by Mr. J. McSweeney. Mr. P. O'Grady's team won.
