The House, by. 328 votes to 222, rejected ;an amendment. reserving to the British Parliament the power to maintain English as the sole; Tan?guage to be used in'the Irish Parliament and Irish law. Courts. ///-• ;: /An amendment intended to .prevent the Irish Parliament from disqualifying candidates for public positions on the ground, that they did not know Gaelic, was _!?6 rejected. Birrell (Chief Secretary for Ireland), ,V. debating- an, amendment proposing to withhold from the. Irish Parliament the power to disestablish any religion, y promised to introduce words to secure that the constitutions of religious bodies will not be interfered with except at.their own desire.'- / //•;- ,• . ._ The amendment. was thereupon withdrawn. ' The Government 'accepted an amendment removing Trinity Col- | lege,' Dublin, and Queen's UniverI sity, Belfast, from the control of the Irish Parliament. ■ * . : Mr. Birrell said he thought that the demand was unnecessary.:, Mr. J. Redmond (Leader of the. Nationalist party) offered no objection to the amendment. The Labour party supported the Government in leaving the control of labour legislation to the Irish Parliament, . the House refusing an amendment to remove it from their province by 294 votes to 198. , . - Mr. Balfour referred to Mr. Churchill's : proposed > septarchy, '■ / and asked whether Yorkshire and Lancashire would have their own labour laws under his scheme of Federal Home Rule. . . ' 3 , Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald (Leader of the' Labour party) said that the factory legislation was administered in Ireland in a disappointing manner. CONVERTS TO HOME RULE. Bdl; but they were : now convinced that spme ; form of . Home ;Rule.is.:. remove "a. standing" danger to . the Empire. They believe that the present Bill is an honest endeavour to remove that danger, and, that itshould be passed.
