RETURN OF THE CADETS.

ON BOARD THE ZEALANDIA.

CIVIC RECEPTION TO-DAY.

The New Zealand cadet contingent, which 50 worthily upheld the credit of the Dominion during its visit to Canada, returned to Auckland by the steamer Zealandia. late last night, and will land this morning. . \]\ the ' boys have returned in good health, except, one, who became ill in Canada and had to remain behind. • There are 20 boys in the contingent, which was selected at the invitation of the Canadian Government to visit Canada at the time the Canadian squad of cadets was on tour. They are under the command of Captain Fullarton, of Dunedin. Their tour has been most successful. At Toronto, they took part in all the military competitions open to cadets,- and they won practically every event. The boys ■ left New Zealand by the Hakura on August 2,.and have thus been away nearly six weeks. They are a fine lot of lads, of ages ranging from 16 to 18 Their average height is sft 7Jin, and their average weight, lOst. Having been specially selected from the whole of the' cadet strength of New Zealand, and specially trained at Wellington, they were, even when they left the Dominion, remarkable for their splendid drill and efficiency. The hoys will disembark at 10.30 o'clock this morning, and will be met on the wharf by between 400 and 500. local cadets. Hsided by the return contingent, the whole body of cadets will march up Queen-street to the Town Halh where a civic welcome will be extended to them by the Mayor and other authorities at 11 o'clock. The public is invited to he present at the ceremony. When the reception is over, the returned cadets will give a military display in front of the Town Hall. Exhibitions will be given of rifle exercises, and physical drill. Five of the boys will remain in Auckland, and the rest will probably all leave for the South by to-night's express.

BEATEN IN FOOTBALL MATCH.

The Canadian cadets were taken for a motor car trip to Winton this morning, and on arrival there were welcomed by- the Mayor, and entertained at luncheon I hey returned to lnvercargill in the. afternoon, and paraded, subsequently playing a football match with a team of. local cadets. Invercargill won by six points to three. 'The Canadian boys play a conventional game, but arc not up to the standard of New Zealand football. This evening they attended a picture nhow, and to-morrow they leave for Dunedin.
