THE MOUNT LYELL DISASTER.
The anxiety felt throughout the colonies for the safety of the miners entombed at Mount Lyell has been to some extent relieved by the good news that a large number of the men are alive. It may be some time
before the full extent of this terrible disaster is fully known, but it is, at leasts not as destructive of human life as was originally feared, and we may hope that further good news will be received. Of one thing vhe public can always be sure when these shocking accidents occur ths»t nothing is lacking which human ingenuity or human daring can do or provide to rescue entombed miners. At Mount Lyell,. as everywhere and always, the self-sacrificing work and ingenious . devices of rescuers . have been deserving of the highest praise. Every entombed man brought alive out of the mine will owe his life to the heroic and tireless efforts made even when hope seemed lost, and the splendid results of the rescue-work will encourage and inspire similar efforts wherever future mining accidents occur. When the mine is reopened, and the fatfe of every miner finally ascertained, the public in New Zealand,. as in Australia, will watch with deepest interest the official inquiry into the cause of the disaster.
