A MINING MAN ABROAD.
Mil. W. F. GRACE'S TOTJIS, " Yes, I have enjoyed my trip to Europe," said Mr. W. F. Grace, general manager of the Waihi. Grand Junction Gold Mining Company, who lias just returned from a six months' tour, during which he has combined business and pleasure. Mr. Grace, however, declined to discuss the position at Waihi, for the reason that ho was nob conversant with the true facts of the situation, and desired to make- a close study of matters .there before entering into any controversial issue.
With regard to tho future of the mine, ho said ho was assured that once tho question of labour was surmounted the Grand Junction mine would go ahead in no uncertain way. The mine had not been damaged by water during the period of idleness, and on the completion of the installation of the new machinery a greater output would naturally evolve. Being an enthusiastic engineer, Mr. Grace made a. close study of modern engineering methods, particularly in Westphalia (Germany). There coalmining was being carried on in a modern and up-to-date way. The coking plants, in bis opinion, were remarkably ingenious, as well as the other machinery for the recovery of by-products, such as ammonia and benzine. Nothing was wasted, a tribute to tho scientific qualities of the modern German ongineer. Another particular point about modern Germany was the thorough and systematic hospitality extended to all who had an interest in Germans and German goods. Mr. Grace will leave by boat to-night for Waihi.
