£2777 FROM 1938 TONS.

TOTAL TO DATE £834.722.

Dußtxo the month of August the, New Zealand Crown Mines crushed and treated 1938 tons, for a return of bullion valued at £2777. Compared with the return for the corresponding period of last year, when 2128 tons gave £4538, this shows a decrease of £1761. The manager of tho Old Hauraki mine, Coromandel, reports that at tho 400 ft level work lias been confined principally to timbering and preparations for starting ! stoping operations, both seaward and . north. The crosscut towards tho Green Harp reef lias been extended 10ft, making 50ft from the flat sheet. At the intermediate levels sloping has been, in progress, arid 101b of picked stone has been, won from the north end. Three stopes arc still being worked at the 500 ft level, with no cliango to report. THAMES DEEP LEVELS. .Mr. T. E. Sheath yesterday telegraphed to Mr. Blow. Under-Secretary for Mines, as follows:"Will you telegraph, to Mr. Lindsay to proceed "to Waihi at oiico to take charge of drill." Mr. Blow replied : — Wiring Mr. Lindsay at once."SILVER STREAM. ' The drive on tho north faco of tho Queen reef at the Silver Stream mine, Marotolo, has beon extended sft. _ Tho •manager reports that tho faco is still extremely hard, but should change for the. better as soon as they com© under tho big blow ahead. In order to reach that point sooner the men were taken from the. Julia stopes on Thursday, and started a third shift on the Queen face for a fewshifts. Fivo day's work in tho Julia stopes secured 4cwt. of ore. The manager considers that better results should be obtained a-s soon as the stopes are in good •working order again.

MONOWAT. At the Monowai mine, Waiomo, during the past week, the stopes both north and south of the winzo under No. 3 level havo been in progress, and the manager states that a fair tonnage of good ore is coming to hand. Two men have been engaged in cleaning out and repairing the No. 2 I love), where it is intended to drive- a crosscut under the new outcrop. Driving was commenced yesterday. For the week ending October 10, tons of oro werecrushed, giving an average assay vain© of £2 4s 3d. Tho ore now being crushed yields but a small amount of concentrates, those obtained during the week giving an average value of £27 6s 3d per ton (for gold and silver). - ''. SAXON. Tho manager of the Saxon mine, Thames, reports as follows : —" The cutting out of the chamber for our No. 7 level is being proceeded with, the' ground being of a very hard nature, and thus making progress slow. The men have also been engaged in putting in tho guides. These are now completed, and both cages working to No. 7 level. I hope to havo the chamber completed by tho end of tho week. The compressor is now completed, and as soon as the chamber is finished tho pipes will be put down the. shaft and tho rock drill installed in place of hand labour." OCCIDENTAL CONSOLIDATED. A few pieces of stone-. from tho winzo and stopo at the Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, showing good dabs of gold, mav be seen at tho oflice of the secretary, Mr. H. J. Lee. In his weekly report the manager states that 7ft. has been added to the winzo on No. 2 reef, making tho total depth 32ffc below No. 5 level. Tho reef is continuing strong, and is of very favourable appearance. The. oro being broken out shows gold, and good dabs are to be seen in the reef at tho bottom of the winze. In the stopes the ore being broken shows gold freely, 301b of pood picked stone being obtained during the week. • About 9011) of picked stone is now in hand. j

NEW SYLVIA. At tin! New Sylvia mine, Thames, tho drive on tho rib of quartz at, No. 3 level that was mnning into the hanging-wall was advanced 17ft, showing about 15in of quartz. Another crosscut is, tho manager reports, being driven north of this rib, and advanced 6ft, with quartz stringers showing. In the topes tho reef maintains its size, and shows gold frequently. Tho report continues : —" We are driving crosscuts into tho footivall for filling, which also act as prospecting drives. Tho intermediate level has been advanced 18ft. The reef is 3ft wide, and is good grade ore, showing gold freely. A few pieces of picked stone were obtained. At tho battery level the drivo on No. 2 reef was advanced 14ift. The reef lias op sued out and is 7ft wide in the face, with no hangingwall showing. The usual stopes on No. 1 reef are in progress, and a steady supply of ore is coming to hand. The' drivo at tho low lovel was advanced 14ft. A mall leader 6in wide was passed through during tho week.'' HAUIIAKI REEFS. The manager of tho Ilauraki Reefs mine, Coromandcl, states that sloping is still in progress on the Hauraki North reef, No. 1 level. The reef maintains its size, and the quartz broken out is being saved for treatment. In the No. 2 level tho face through the break is being continued in good rock. One shift has been started opening out on one of the quartz veins cut through, 40ft back from the face. At the Old Hauraki end. 400 ft level, it is intended to discontinue for a tirno driving the intermediate level going south off the main rise, and to open out on the reef higher up. driving in a northerly direction. In the old intermedia to workings, 100 ft south of tho main rise, tho men have discontinued rising, and have started to work along a slope off the rise. NOTES. The drivo north from the top of No, 2 rise at the Golden Belt mine, caves - ville, was holed to the south end of tho No. 2 (or road) level by drill hole on Thursday last, and has since been opened out and connected, tho lino of drivo and levels striking exactly and making a very neat connection. The manager reports that the mine is now thoroughly ventilated, and it will be possible to op en up the blocks of ore discovered in this section.

• Tho -main level crosscut at the ' New Success mine. Coromandel, is now advanced to 150 ft. The manager reports that a small vein has been intersected, carrying: good prospects of free gold, which goes to prove that a golden channel of country is being penetrated. The mineral bar is showing very strong, and has every appearance of continuing up to tho lead being: driven on.
