WORK OF NATIVE SCHOOLS.
NATIVE MINISTER'S PRAISE. [BY TELEGRAPH.speciaI correspondent.] Wellington, Friday. High appreciation of the work done by native school teachers was expressed by the Hon. W. H. Herries (Native Minister) when tho Estimates of the Department of Education were being reviewed in the House of Representatives this evening. These people, said Mr. Herries, were not only teachers, but pioneers of civilisation in the back blocks. They did work which in a great many instances was not appreciated by those who knew very little about the work they did. The Minister's words of praise were heartily echoed by the Hon. A. T. Ngata, Dr. Te Rangiliiroa, Air. W. D. S. Mac Donald, and Mr. J. A. Young. The Hon. Dr. Pomare said the native teacher was in many cases tho sole guide, philosopher and friend of tho Maori.
