CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION.

In a compensation case brought before the Arbitration Court to-day by John Dalziell against Craw Bros., flaxmillers, Tokomaru, tho plaintiff said that while in, defendants' employ he met with an accident which rendered his right hand useless, and caused him to lose one finger. His wages previously had averaged £2 83 a week, and he claimed compensation equivalent to £1 4s a week.

Defendants denied that plaintiff was in their employ. They said he had been employed bv Suckling, the lessee of the mill. The Court reserved its decision. An accident alleged to have led to blood-poisoning formed the basis of a claim for compensation brought by Herbert George Hervay against Hermann Heinemaim, of Wellington, draper. Plaintiff said while working for defendant lie had his hands crushed between a door and a sbox he was carrying. Bloodpoisoning set in, and plaintiff" was unable to continue his work. He claimed half wages (£1 5s per week) from tho date of tho accident.

Defendant denied that blood poisoning was the result of the ' accidehfc, which was only a slight one. After hearing medical evidence, tho Court gave judgement for the plaintiff for £10 and costs (£4 4s), as for tho injury to tho hand. Tho deat of a sin bio employes was responsible for a claim by Florence Hardy,, of Wellington, against Tonks and Andrews, contractors. Plaintiff's late husband was employed by defendants, and while in their * employ it was alleged, injured' his heart in lifting material at their stable. Death resulting, plaintiff and her two children wero left without means. Sho claimed £429 compensation, and £20 funeral and medical expenses.

The Court gavo judgment for defendants, holding that plaintiff had failed to show that death arose out of, and in course of. his employment.
