AN IMPASSABLE ROAD.

TE AKAU SETTLERS' PLIGHT.

NO OUTLET TO RAGLAN.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—own correspondent.]

Raglan, Thursday. The Auckland Land Board met here today. A number of To Akau settlers interviewed the Board, and made representations that when the sections were thrown :<vpen tho poster plans issued by the Board stated that a road to deep water at Raglan Harbour was well forward, and was being formed. Now, three year.", later, the said road was. and always had been, impassable for vehicles. Some settlers were now conveying their wool 30 miles to Ngaruawahia, because there was no possibility of getting it over the 11 miles of so-called road to Raglan Harbour.

Mr. Skeot (Crown Lands Commissioner) said tho whole of the money available for loading the block had been spent, but, unfortunately, as tho Board thoughtand he said so advisedlyit had been spent by another Department. Tho road in question was supposed to have been made. Whether it really was a road the settlers knew best.

One settler replied that it took him five hours to travel 11 miles on horseback to Raglan. He added that £6 per ton freight was being paid on goods from Ngaruawahia, and it had cost him 10s per 100 ft for cartage 'of timber for his home.

Tho Board expressed sympathy with the settlors, and said an officer had be-in sent, to inspect and report on the roads to the Government. However, the Board would press for a special grant to open up the road to Raglan Harbour.
