THE STAR OF CANADA.

SALVAGE WORK CONTINUED.

VESSEL GRADUALLY SETTLING.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Cxsr.ORNE, Thursday. Remarkably good work has been done in connection with the dismantling of the steamer Star of Canada. Messrs. Niven and Co. 'have been most fortunate in having almost a continuous run of fine weather since they took over the salvaging operations about six weeks ago. It is expected that nothing but tho skeleton will remain by the end of this week.

Diver Walters, who contracted to salve tho antimony and lead from No. 3 hold, has been most successful in his efforts, having practically cleared out the hold. Ho recovered 166 tons, only two ingots being left. One of these fell out of the sling, and one is situated in tho far corner of the hold.

Before leaving the ship yesterday the diver prepared tho forward winches for being salvaged. These have been submerged for soma time, through the settling down of tho bow of tho steamer, and it was feared they would bo lost. It is now hoped to save the whole of tho three sets, and as tho two after sets can easily be. taken off there is a ' possibility of the 10 winches being included amongst the salvaged gear.

All • the refrigerator machinery has left tho vessel. Operations are now practically confined to stripping the deck, and ono of tho last things to be done will bo to cut away the masts. Tho forward derricks have been sent ashore.

Tho vessel is settling down very gradually, and it is expected she will continue to do so slowly, until she reaches bedrock.
