POLICE COURT NEWS.

At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. 32. C. Cutten, S.M., one first offender for drunkenness was fined ss. James Muroney, another inebriate, was remanded for a week for medical treatment.

William Charles Thorpe, charged with stealing £32 14s. belonging to Harry Charles Bennett, on June 6, 1910, at Devonport, was remanded until Friday, bail being allowed in two sureties *of £50 each.

Tano Davis, charged with stealing an overcoat, valued at 30s. and a gold watch-chain, valued at 40s, the property of .Mrs. Puhata., and a silver ring and stone, valued at 50s, the property of Toheriri Peraroa, . was remanded until Monday.

John Joseph Byrne was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, and with habitually consorting with thieves and idle persons. Chief-Detective MacMahon said that the accused hung round hotels waiting for men from the country with money, whom lie might swindle. Ho was a dangerous man to havo idle, about tho town. Tho accused was sentenced to two months' hard labour, and prohibited. Another man, Ernest Albert Stevens, who was similarly charged, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, as he stated that ho had only into town for a few days, and had a goo'd job at Whangarata to go back to.

Joseph Holt, for a breach of his prohibition order, was convicted and discharged, and for using obscene language, was fined £2, in default 14' days' imprisonment. Wm. Sullivan, for using obscene language on-the Queen-street Wharf to the captain of his ship, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and ordered to bo put on board his ship at Wellington, before sho left New Zealand.

Jas. Griffin was charged with cruelly ill-treating a horso by 'beating it with tho head of a riding whip on September 6. Accused denied tho offence, but tho magistrate held that cruelty had been proved, and inflicted a fine of £1, with costs £1 14s.

A charge against Wm. Dalziell, of using insulting language to D. J. Murphy, was withdrawn, casts £5 3s being granted against tho complainant.
