THE COST OF LIVING.
AN INCREASE IN PRICES. ~. " MEAT, BUTTER, AND COAL. '■ Increases have just been made in the price* of meaf, butter, "and coal. ' Owing to the increased cost' of distributing coal and other causes, the price of this commodity has , been raised 2s per "ton. The wholesale price of butter was increased yesterday by id per lb all round. ' "The Auckland master butchers report that in consequence of the recent advance in the prices *of fat stock, they have been compelled to make a compensating increase in their retail -prices of meat, which will • come into force from to-day. The advances are chiefly in connection with the prime cuts of beef, veal, and poi" , together with a few minor advances in re- . gard to mutton, while the price of lamb remain's unaltered. • ■ * It is not stated what is . the cause of the increase in the price of butter, but as the dairying season will soon be in full swing, a' reduction will probably be made in the near future. In connection with the advance made it is interesting to, note that it is estimated that there were 27,286 boxes of butter in cool store in different parts of the Dominion yesterday.
