A BATTLESHIP WHICH HAS COMPLETELY ALTERED HER APPEARANCE IN SIX MONTHS: H.M.S. LION, AS SHE NOW APPEARS.

H.M.S. Lion is the largest and taost powerful completed -warship in the world. It will bo remembered that the mighty battle-cruiser developed ecrious faults on her speed trials. The 70,000-horsc power turbines, which drive tho cruiser's 26.350

tons through the water at a speed of over 31 knots an hour, were responsible for the trouble. The terrific heat necessary to raise (ho steam for this power and speed proved to bo more than many parts of tho jship could stand. The foremost funnel was placed between the bridge from which tho ship is navigated and the tripod mast on -which the fire-control platform is situated. So ■ terrific was tho heat generated during the full-power run. that nearly every metal fitting on. the bridge was twisted, and some close to the funnel actually began to run, while the fire-control platform abaft the funnel, high up on the mast, -was rendered untenable by the flames which poured from the funnel and rose to a height of 50ft. above it. Alterations costing £25,000 had to be made to the vessel, with the result that she appears as shown in this photograph. 11l c mainmast has been shifted in front of the first funnel, a single mast replacing the tripod. :
