MILLIONAIRE'S DEATH.

STRANGE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CASE,

WIPE DISMISSES DOCTORS.

MR. Nixo.v, United States Senator and multi-millionaire, a Nevada rancher and mineowner, who started life as a farm boy, died at Washington recently, after three days' Christian Science treatment for meningitis, ordered by telegraph by his wife. Tho eminent specialists who were attending him were instructed by Mrs. Nixon, while she was speeding by special train across the continent, to surrender tho patient to Mr. William Campbell, a noted Christian Scientist, whoso efforts, however, were useless.

Tho fact that Mr. Nixon himself was not a Christian Scientist, and. was unconscious and unable to protest against any change in his treatment, attracts national attention to the case. Mr. Nixon was operated upon for a nasal affliction, but meningitis developed, and his condition became precarious. Dr. Harvey Gushing, the most eminent meningitis specialist in the country, and who has just accepted the chair of medicine at Harvard University, had charge of tho case, and he notified Mrs., Nixon, who was in Nevada, that her husband might not be able to rally. Mrs. Nixon thereupon started for Washington by special train, meanwhile ordering her husband to bo given over to Mr. Campbell, who recently became prominent through claiming that all the Christian .Scientists on board the Titanic had been saved because of their belief. Mr. Campbell began his treatment, and Mr. Nixon was in stupor throughout, but the doctors believe that he could have been kept alive until Mrs. Nixon's arrival if proper medical efforts had been made. \

Mrs. Nixon joined the Eddyites last year, but could not persuade her husband to follow her, despite her enthusiasm for the new creed. Senators Works and Clapp, who are also Christian Scientists, were instrumental in inducing Mr, Campbell to accept charge of the case. Senator Works delivered a speech in favour of Christian Science in the Senate several months ago, declaring that he had been converted because the Christian Scientists cured his wife after her physicians had given her up.
