THE THRIVING WAIKATO.
HAMILTON'S PROGRESS.
PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS.
There is a proposal before the ratepayers of Hamilton to borrow £80,000 for expenditure in improving the thriving . centre of the Waikato district. Yesterday a Herald representative had an interview with the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr.. A. E. Manning), who explained how his corporation proposed to bring municipal matters lip to date.
" Hamilton is going ahead so fast, and the population is growing so quickly that it is absolutely necessary that something should bo done for the town," he said. " As is the case with every other town in the Dominion, our chief trouble is ; he improvement and maintenance of the streets, and if our proposals are approved by the ratepayers, it is proposed to spend £40.000 in making our roads thoroughly good. It is probable that Victoria-street, which is the main business thoroughfare, will be made a good tar and macadam road, and the side'streets will be improved in proportion.
" With the increased population, and the recent extension of the borough bringing Claudelands under the Council's control," Mr. Manning went on to say, "it is necessary that the drainage and water scheme should be extended, and we propose to spend about £25,000 on this work. Beautifying the town, the establishment of municipal abattoirs, and other smaller works will absorb tho remainder of the loan, but no one will deny that all the money will be well spent, and will be productive in more, ways 1 than one."
The loan proposals will be submitted to a poll of ratepayers on August 16.
